Breastfeeding Update: Efforts continue to encourage and support breastfeeding on a variety of fronts: federal policy, state level efforts to support breastfeeding promotion at a local level.
Federal health care reform law requires that starting in August 2012 lactation services be covered without cost sharing (“Comprehensive lactation support and counseling, by a trained provider during pregnancy and/or in the postpartum period, and costs for renting breastfeeding equipment”). Healthy People 2020 has updated their breastfeeding goals to 81.9% of mothers ever breastfeeding and 60.6% breastfeed for six months.
