“Research into Practice: Integrating New Latch Techniques” by: Cathy Watson Genna, BS, IBCLC

Cathy Watson GennaCathy Watson Genna has been an IBCLC in private practice in NYC since 1992.  She has a special interest in the anatomical, genetic and neurological influences on infant sucking skills, and writes and speaks on these topics.  She is co-researcher in a study utilizing ultrasound to examine tongue movements during breastfeeding in infants with ankyloglossia and other sucking problems.


Course Objectives:

  • Describe the changes in thinking about infant attachment to the breast in the past 20 years
  • List 3 ways to facilitate infant and maternal innate feeding capabilities.
  • Describe the importance of contact and gravitational stability for human breastfeeding
  • Detail strategies for optimizing latch when breastfeeding tools are needed
