    USLCA, the US affiliate of ILCA, promotes the field of lactation consultation and provides a vehicle for sharing information about the practical and business aspects of working as a lactation consultant. Membership in ILCA confers many benefits, including a subscription to the Journal of Human Lactation which is peer-reviewed and published quarterly.

Regional Organizations

 

  • MidSouth Lactation Consultant Association (MSLCA) www.midsouthlca.org
    MSLCA is a regional member of the US Lactation Consultant Association which is an affiliate of the International Lactation Consultant Association. MSLCA meetings provide an opportunity for networking among lactation consultants and others who work in breastfeeding promotion and education. A short business session is combined with an educational program to offer a forum for members to discuss professional, social, and political issues which impact lactation consultants and breastfeeding mothers and babies.
  • North Carolina Breastfeeding Coalition (NCBC) www.ncbfc.org
    The mission of the North Carolina Breastfeeding Coalition is to promote, protect and support breastfeeding through a cooperative network of individuals, coalitions, agencies and organizations. NCBC meets four times each year in various sites across the state – often coordinated to be on the same day as the MidSouth Lactation Consultant Association meetings in order to save travel time for individuals interested in working with both groups.
  • ZipMilk is a community service of the North Carolina Breastfeeding Coalition (NCBC), providing listings for breastfeeding resources based on five-digit ZIP codes. Contact information is collected for several categories: Professional Breastfeeding Support, Community Breastfeeding Support, WIC Program Coordinators, Breastfeeding Equipment and Supplies, and Regional Breastfeeding Coalitions. All information is reviewed by the North Carolina Breastfeeding Coalition, but NCBC does not accept liability for the content.   • Nursing Mothers of Raleigh (NMR) www.nursingmothersofraleigh.org
    This breastfeeding mothers’ group provides support and education (by telephone, website and at public meetings) to families in the Raleigh area who wish to breastfeed their children. They are willing to assist with the creation of other unaffiliated support groups through sharing of NMR brochure template, by-laws, constitution, public talk outlines and mentoring.
  • Triangle Breastfeeding Alliance (TBA) www.nctba.org
    The Triangle Breastfeeding Alliance is an organization working to increase networking and education for those who provide care to breastfeeding families. Their mission is to increase the number of mothers who achieve their personal breastfeeding goals and to increase their satisfaction with the care and support that they receive. TBA has an open meeting at the Andrews Conference Center at WakeMed Raleigh on the first Tuesday of each month from 1-3 PM.  Attending members include International Board Certified Lactation Consultants, breastfeeding educators, a local family practice physician, nurses, nutritionists, dieticians, chiropractors and volunteers from community-based breastfeeding support groups.
